Apple Wallet vs Google Wallet: how package tracking compares
Both wallets can show your orders, and both depend on the shop or your email to get them there. Neither lets you type in a tracking number. Here is how they differ, and how to track any parcel in either one.
Side by side
| Feature | Apple Wallet | Google Wallet | TrackIt (either wallet) |
|---|---|---|---|
| How an order gets in | Apple Pay at a supporting shop, the Track with Apple Wallet button, or an order email in Mail on iOS 26 | From order emails in your Gmail, for supported shops | You paste a tracking number |
| Where it works | Depends on the shop. Mail tracking needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence | US only, according to Google | Wherever Apple Wallet or Google Wallet is available |
| Type in a tracking number | No | No | Yes |
| Carriers | Whatever the shop or email provides | Detailed updates from participating US carriers | 3,000+, detected from the number |
| Where you see the status | Wallet, under Orders | Wallet, under View more, then transactions | In Wallet, with notifications as it changes |
| What you need | iOS 16 or later (iOS 26 for Mail) | Gmail with package tracking switched on | A free TrackIt account |
How Apple Wallet tracks packages
Apple calls the feature Order Tracking. An order reaches Wallet in one of three ways: you pay with Apple Pay at a shop that supports it (iOS 16 or later), you tap the Track with Apple Wallet button on the shop's confirmation page (iOS 17 or later), or Mail finds the order in an email on an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence (iOS 26). To see your orders, open Wallet and tap Orders.
How Google Wallet tracks packages
Google Wallet reads order details from your Gmail once you turn on package tracking in Gmail's settings. Orders arriving soon show on the Wallet home screen, and the rest are under View more, then View more transactions. Tapping Track package opens the carrier's website. Google says the feature is currently only available in the US.
Where both fall short
- Neither wallet has a field for a tracking number, so a parcel from a friend or a small seller has no way in.
- Both rely on the shop or the email being supported, which leaves out many orders.
- Google's version is limited to the US, and Apple's Mail tracking to newer iPhones.
Tracking any parcel in either wallet
TrackIt works from the tracking number, so it doesn't depend on the shop, the email or the country. On an iPhone, paste the number into the box above and tap Add to Apple Wallet to get a live Wallet order. On Android, open TrackIt For Android, paste the number and tap Add to Google Wallet to get a pass that updates as the parcel moves.
Common questions
Which wallet is better for tracking packages?
They work differently. Apple Wallet shows orders from supporting shops and, on iOS 26, from Mail. Google Wallet shows orders found in Gmail and is US only. Which one suits you comes down to your phone, and neither accepts a tracking number typed in by hand.
Can I add a tracking number to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet?
Not with the built-in features. TrackIt adds any tracking number to Apple Wallet as an order, or to Google Wallet as a pass.
Does Google Wallet track packages outside the US?
Google says its order tracking is currently only available in the US. TrackIt's Google Wallet passes work in any country where Google Wallet is available.
Do I need Apple Pay or Gmail to use TrackIt?
No. TrackIt only needs the tracking number, so it doesn't matter how you paid or which email address the order went to.
