How to track a package in Google Wallet

Google Wallet can show your online orders, but only in the US and only for orders it finds in your Gmail. For any other parcel, add the tracking number to TrackIt and tap Add to Google Wallet.

The short answer

There are two ways to track a package in Google Wallet. The first is Google's built-in order tracking: turn on package tracking in Gmail, and orders from supported shops appear in Google Wallet by themselves. Google says this feature is currently only available in the US.

The second works anywhere Google Wallet does. Paste the parcel's tracking number into TrackIt For Android and tap Add to Google Wallet. TrackIt saves a pass to your Wallet and keeps it updated as the carrier scans the parcel. It doesn't matter which shop you bought from or which email address the order went to.

Track any tracking number in Google Wallet with TrackIt

You need an Android phone with the Google Wallet app, in a country where Google Wallet is available. Android limits how many pass notifications you get in a day, so a parcel with many scans might not notify you for every one.

  1. Go to trackit.international/android and sign in, or create a free account with your email, Google or Apple.
  2. Paste your tracking number. TrackIt detects the carrier from the number, across 3,000+ carriers including UPS, FedEx, USPS and DHL.
  3. Tap Add to Google Wallet. On an Android phone the pass goes straight into the Google Wallet app. On a Mac or PC the same button saves it to your Google account, and it shows up in Wallet on your phone a moment later.
  4. Open Google Wallet to see the parcel's status. The pass updates when the carrier scans the parcel, and Android notifies you when the status changes.

Google Wallet's built-in order tracking

Google Wallet pulls order details from your Gmail. For supported shops that can include the receipt, the tracking number and the shipping status. To switch it on, open Gmail's settings, choose your account, and turn on package tracking along with smart features in other Google products. Gmail and Google Wallet must use the same Google account.

Once it's on, here is how to find a package:

  1. Open the Google Wallet app. Orders arriving soon show on the home screen.
  2. Tap View more, then View more transactions. You might be asked to verify it's you.
  3. Tap Orders to filter the list, then tap your order.
  4. Tap Track package to open the carrier's website for the detailed tracking.

What the built-in tracking doesn't cover

TrackIt covers each of those, because it works from the tracking number alone.

  • Anyone outside the US. Google's help page says the feature is currently only available there.
  • Orders that aren't in your Gmail, such as ones sent to a work address or another email provider.
  • Shops Google doesn't support yet. Google describes it as working for supported merchants.
  • A parcel you only have a tracking number for. There is no field for typing one in.
  • Detailed carrier updates outside the US. Google says these come only from participating carriers in the US.

Which one should you use?

If you're in the US and your order emails go to Gmail, switch on Google's own tracking, since it needs nothing more from you. Use TrackIt for everything it misses: parcels outside the US, orders sent to another inbox, marketplace sellers, and anything you only have a tracking number for.

Common questions

How do I track a package in Google Wallet?

In the US, turn on package tracking in Gmail's settings, then open Google Wallet, tap View more, then View more transactions, and choose the order. Anywhere else, or for a parcel Google didn't find, paste the tracking number into TrackIt For Android and tap Add to Google Wallet.

Can I add a tracking number to Google Wallet manually?

Google Wallet has no field for typing in a tracking number. Its orders come from Gmail. TrackIt adds one for you: paste the number and it saves a parcel pass to Google Wallet.

Does Google Wallet order tracking work outside the US?

Google's help page says its order tracking is currently only available in the US. TrackIt works in any country where Google Wallet is available.

Why isn't my order showing in Google Wallet?

The usual reasons are that package tracking is off in Gmail, the order email went to a different account or email provider, the shop isn't supported, or you're outside the US. Adding the tracking number through TrackIt gets the parcel into Wallet in each case.

Which carriers work?

TrackIt supports 3,000+ carriers worldwide, including UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, Royal Mail and Australia Post, and detects the carrier from the tracking number.

Is there a version for iPhone?

Yes. TrackIt For Apple adds any tracking number to Apple Wallet as a live order. See the guide to tracking a package in Apple Wallet.
